"The Outsider"

Matthew Hemminghaus 2017

The Outsider is called so because usually we hatch all our chickens but this guy was given to us as an adult, hence outside of our gene pool. He was so beautiful I couldn't turn him down and drove about an hour and a half to collect him. The basis behind the set is based on my experience at the Standing Rock Indian reservation in North Dakota, where I went and protested the crossing to the Missouri river with the Dakota Access pipeline. The orange baling twine river with the green propane caps represent the oil flowing from the pvc pipe in the background, versus the all natural twine on the right side of the photo. To continue with the "Outsider" theme, there is a colander with a wig on it floating in the sky in the background, suggesting a UFO in disguise. The set is built with all materials I had collected over the course of the winter and early spring, including dog hair, goldenrod stalks, and honey bee comb.

All frames are hand built using reclaimed antique wood and non reflective Ultra View glass.  The mats are acid free 100% cotton rag and the images are printed using archival ink on Museo Silver Rag paper.
